VIII. De visie van zondeloosheid
1. Visie zal eerst in glimpen tot je komen, maar die zullen volstaan om je te tonen wat jou, die jouw broeder zonder zonde ziet, gegeven wordt. De waarheid wordt jou door je verlangen teruggegeven, zoals ze door je verlangen naar iets anders voor jou verloren ging. Ontsluit de heilige plaats die jij hebt afgesloten door aan dat ‘andere’ waarde te verlenen, en dat wat nooit verloren ging, keert in stilte terug. Het is voor jou bewaard. Visie zou niet nodig zijn, als er geen oordeel was geveld. Verlang nu dat het totaal ongedaan wordt gemaakt, en het wordt voor jou gedaan.2. Wens jij niet je eigen Identiteit te kennen? Zou jij niet blij je twijfels voor zekerheid willen inruilen? Zou jij niet graag vrij van ellende willen zijn, en opnieuw leren wat vreugde is? Je heilige relatie biedt jou dit alles. Zoals die jou gegeven werd, zo zullen haar effecten zijn. En zoals haar heilige doel niet door jou werd gemaakt, zo is ook het middel waardoor de goede afloop jouw deel wordt, niet van jou afkomstig. Verheug je over wat jouw deel is door er enkel om te vragen, en denk niet dat jij het middel of het doel hoeft te maken. Dit alles wordt jou gegeven die je broeder louter als zondeloos ziet. Dit alles is gegeven; het wacht slechts op jouw verlangen het te ontvangen. Visie wordt vrijelijk gegeven aan hen die vragen om te zien.

3. De zondeloosheid van je broeder wordt jou in een stralend licht gegeven, om er met de visie van de Heilige Geest naar te kijken, en je er samen met Hem over te verheugen. Want vrede zal komen tot allen die daar met een waarachtig verlangen en een oprechte bedoeling om vragen en die dit delen met de Heilige Geest, en eensgezind zijn met Hem over wat verlossing is. Wees dan ook bereid jouw broeder zonder zonde te zien, opdat Christus voor jouw visie mag oprijzen en je vreugde schenken. En ken geen waarde toe aan je broeders lichaam, dat hem vasthoudt in illusies over wat hij is. Het is evenzeer zijn als jouw verlangen om zijn zondeloosheid te zien. En zegen de Zoon van God in jouw relatie, en zie niet in hem wat jij van hem hebt gemaakt.

4. De Heilige Geest garandeert dat wat God heeft gewild en aan jou heeft gegeven, van jou zal zijn. Dit is je doel nu, en de visie die het tot het jouwe maakt, staat klaar om te worden gegeven. Jij bezit de visie die jou in staat stelt het lichaam niet te zien. En wanneer je naar je broeder kijkt, zul je een altaar voor je Vader zien, heilig als de Hemel, met een gloed van schitterende zuiverheid, en sprankelend van de stralende lelies die jij erop hebt neergelegd. Wat kun jij van meer waarde achten dan dit? Waarom denk je dat het lichaam een beter thuis is, een veiliger onderkomen voor Gods Zoon? Waarom kijk je daar liever naar dan naar de waarheid? Hoe kan het werktuig der vernietiging nu de voorkeur krijgen, en gekozen worden om het heilige huis te vervangen dat de Heilige Geest biedt, en waar Hij met jou zal wonen?

5. Het lichaam is het teken van zwakte, kwetsbaarheid en machtsverlies. Kan zo’n verlosser jou helpen? Zou jij je in je verdriet en behoefte aan hulp tot het hulpeloze wenden? Is het armzalig kleine de volmaakte keus om een beroep op te doen voor kracht? Een oordeel zal jouw verlosser zwak doen lijken. Toch ben jij degene die zijn kracht nodig heeft. Er is geen probleem, geen gebeurtenis of situatie, noch enige complexiteit waarvoor visie geen oplossing biedt. Alles is verlost wanneer het met visie wordt bekeken. Want dit is niet jouw zicht, en het brengt de wetten met zich mee geliefd door Hem wiens zicht het wel is.

6. Alles wat met visie wordt bekeken, valt zachtjes op zijn plaats, volgens de wetten die er door Zijn rustig en zeker zicht aan zijn verleend. De afloop voor alles waar Hij naar kijkt staat altijd vast. Want het zal aan Zijn doel beantwoorden, wanneer het in een vorm wordt gezien die niet is aangepast, en volmaakt geschikt is om daaraan te beantwoorden. Vernietigingsdrang wordt goedaardig, en zonde wordt onder Zijn zachtmoedige blik in zegen omgezet. Wat kunnen de ogen van het lichaam waarnemen met het vermogen tot correctie? Zijn ogen stellen zich op zonde in en zijn niet bij machte daar in welke vorm ook aan voorbij te zien, en ze zien die overal in alles. Kijk met die ogen, en alles zal veroordeeld voor je staan. Al wat jou zou kunnen verlossen, zul je nooit zien. Je heilige relatie, de bron van je verlossing, zal van elke betekenis verstoken zijn, en haar hoogst heilige doel zal zijn beroofd van het middel ter verwezenlijking ervan.

7. Een oordeel is slechts een stuk speelgoed, een gril, een onzinnig middel om het ijdele spel van de dood in je verbeelding te spelen. Maar visie zet alle dingen recht, en brengt ze zachtjes onder het milde bewind van de hemelse wetten. Maar wat als je inzag dat deze wereld een hallucinatie is? En wat als je werkelijk begreep dat jij haar hebt bedacht? Wat als je besefte dat degenen die erin lijken rond te lopen om te zondigen en te sterven, aan te vallen en te moorden en zichzelf te vernietigen, totaal onwerkelijk zijn? Zou je vertrouwen kunnen hebben in hetgeen je ziet, als je dit aanvaardde? En zou je het dan zien?

8. Hallucinaties verdwijnen als ze worden gezien als wat ze zijn. Dit is de genezing en de remedie. Geloof ze niet en ze zijn verdwenen. En al wat je hoeft te doen is erkennen dat jij dit hebt gedaan. Wanneer je eenmaal dit eenvoudige feit aanvaardt en de macht die jij ze hebt verleend terughaalt naar jezelf, ben je van ze bevrijd. Een ding is zeker: hallucinaties dienen een doel, en wanneer dit doel niet langer wordt hooggehouden, verdwijnen ze. De vraag is dan ook nooit of jij ze wilt, maar altijd: wil je het doel dat ze dienen? Deze wereld lijkt vele doelen aan te reiken, elk verschillend en elk van andere waarde. Toch zijn ze allemaal hetzelfde. Wederom is er geen rangorde, alleen een ogenschijnlijke hiërarchie van waarden.

9. Er zijn maar twee doelen mogelijk. Het ene is zonde, het andere heiligheid. Daartussen is niets, en welke jij kiest bepaalt wat je ziet. Want wat je ziet is eenvoudig de manier waarop jij verkiest aan je doel te beantwoorden. Hallucinaties dienen om aan het doel van de waanzin te beantwoorden. Ze zijn het middel waarmee de buitenwereld, die van binnenuit wordt geprojecteerd, zich aanpast aan de zonde en getuige lijkt van haar realiteit. Het is nog steeds waar dat daarbuiten niets is. Maar op niets worden alle projecties gemaakt. Want het is de projectie die dit ‘niets’ alle betekenis geeft die het heeft.

10. Wat geen betekenis heeft, kan niet worden waargenomen. En betekenis kijkt altijd naar binnen om zichzelf te vinden, en kijkt dan pas naar buiten. Alle betekenis die jij de wereld buiten je geeft moet dus wel het schouwspel weerspiegelen dat jij vanbinnen zag; of beter, als je überhaupt al zag, of enkel ertegen oordeelde. Visie is het middel waarmee de Heilige Geest jouw nachtmerries in gelukkige dromen vertaalt; jouw wilde hallucinaties, die jou alle angstaanjagende resultaten van denkbeeldige zonde laten zien, vertaalt in die rustige en geruststellende taferelen waardoor Hij ze vervangen wil. Deze lieflijke taferelen en geluiden worden met blijdschap bezien, en met vreugde gehoord. Het zijn Zijn vervangingsmiddelen voor al de schrikwekkende taferelen en krijsende geluiden die de bedoeling van het ego naar jouw met afschuw vervulde bewustzijn heeft gebracht. Ze keren zich af van de zonde, en brengen jou in herinnering dat niet de werkelijkheid jou angst aanjaagt, en dat de vergissingen die jij gemaakt hebt kunnen worden gecorrigeerd.

11. Wanneer je hebt gekeken naar wat schrikwekkend leek, en het hebt zien veranderen in een schouwspel van lieflijkheid en vrede, wanneer je hebt gekeken naar scènes van geweld en dood, en hebt gadegeslagen hoe ze veranderen in rustige taferelen van tuinen onder de open hemel, met helder levenschenkend water dat er vrolijk langsstroomt in ruisende beken die nooit opdrogen, wie zou jou dan moeten overreden de gave van visie aan te nemen? En wie zou er, na visie, datgene kunnen weigeren wat zich daarna beslist aandient? Denk slechts een ogenblik lang alleen hieraan: je kunt de heiligheid aanschouwen die God Zijn Zoon gegeven heeft. En nooit hoef je te denken dat er iets anders is wat jij kunt zien.

The Vision of Sinlessness

T-20.VIII.1. Vision will come to you at first in glimpses, but they will be enough to show you what is given you who see your brother sinless. 2 Truth is restored to you through your desire, as it was lost to you through your desire for something else. 3 Open the holy place that you closed off by valuing the "something else," and what was never lost will quietly return. 4 It has been saved for you. 5 Vision would not be necessary had judgment not been made. 6 Desire now its whole undoing, and it is done for you.

T-20.VIII.2. Do you not want to know your own Identity? 2 Would you not happily exchange your doubts for certainty? 3 Would you not willingly be free of misery, and learn again of joy? 4 Your holy relationship offers all this to you. 5 As it was given you, so will be its effects. 6 And as its holy purpose was not made by you, the means by which its happy end is yours is also not of you. 7 Rejoice in what is yours but for the asking, and think not that you need make either means or end. 8 All this is given you who would but see your brother sinless. 9 All this is given, waiting on your desire but to receive it. 10 Vision is freely given to those who ask to see.

T-20.VIII.3. Your brother's sinlessness is given you in shining light, to look on with the Holy Spirit's vision and to rejoice in along with Him. 2 For peace will come to all who ask for it with real desire and sincerity of purpose, shared with the Holy Spirit and at one with Him on what salvation is. 3 Be willing, then, to see your brother sinless, that Christ may rise before your vision and give you joy. 4 And place no value on your brother's body, which holds him to illusions of what he is. 5 It is his desire to see his sinlessness, as it is yours. 6 And bless the Son of God in your relationship, nor see in him what you have made of him.

T-20.VIII.4. The Holy Spirit guarantees that what God willed and gave you shall be yours. 2 This is your purpose now, and the vision that makes it yours is ready to be given. 3 You have the vision that enables you to see the body not. 4 And as you look upon your brother, you will see an altar to your Father, holy as Heaven, glowing with radiant purity and sparkling with the shining lilies you laid upon it. 5 What can you value more than this? 6 Why do you think the body is a better home, a safer shelter for God's Son? 7 Why would you rather look on it than on the truth? 8 How can the engine of destruction be preferred, and chosen to replace the holy home the Holy Spirit offers, where He will dwell with you?

T-20.VIII.5. The body is the sign of weakness, vulnerability and loss of power. 2 Can such a savior help you? 3 Would you turn in your distress and need for help unto the helpless? 4 Is the pitifully little the perfect choice to call upon for strength? 5 Judgment will seem to make your savior weak. 6 Yet it is you who need his strength. 7 There is no problem, no event or situation, no perplexity that vision will not solve. 8 All is redeemed when looked upon with vision. 9 For this is not your sight, and brings with it the laws beloved of Him Whose sight it is.

T-20.VIII.6. Everything looked upon with vision falls gently into place, according to the laws brought to it by His calm and certain sight. 2 The end for everything He looks upon is always sure. 3 For it will meet His purpose, seen in unadjusted form and suited perfectly to meet it. 4 Destructiveness becomes benign, and sin is turned to blessing under His gentle gaze. 5 What can the body's eyes perceive, with power to correct? 6 Its eyes adjust to sin, unable to overlook it in any form and seeing it everywhere, in everything. 7 Look through its eyes, and everything will stand condemned before you. 8 All that could save you, you will never see. 9 Your holy relationship, the source of your salvation, will be deprived of meaning, and its most holy purpose bereft of means for its accomplishment.

T-20.VIII.7. Judgment is but a toy, a whim, the senseless means to play the idle game of death in your imagination. 2 But vision sets all things right, bringing them gently within the kindly sway of Heaven's laws. 3 What if you recognized this world is an hallucination? 4 What if you really understood you made it up? 5 What if you realized that those who seem to walk about in it, to sin and die, attack and murder and destroy themselves, are wholly unreal? 6 Could you have faith in what you see, if you accepted this? 7 And would you see it?

T-20.VIII.8. Hallucinations disappear when they are recognized for what they are. 2 This is the healing and the remedy. 3 Believe them not and they are gone. 4 And all you need to do is recognize that you did this. 5 Once you accept this simple fact and take unto yourself the power you gave them, you are released from them. 6 One thing is sure; hallucinations serve a purpose, and when that purpose is no longer held they disappear. 7 Therefore, the question never is whether you want them, but always, do you want the purpose that they serve? 8 This world seems to hold out many purposes, each different and with different values. 9 Yet they are all the same. 10 Again there is no order; only a seeming hierarchy of values.

T-20.VIII.9. Only two purposes are possible. 2 And one is sin, the other holiness. 3 Nothing is in between, and which you choose determines what you see. 4 For what you see is merely how you elect to meet your goal. 5 Hallucinations serve to meet the goal of madness. 6 They are the means by which the outside world, projected from within, adjusts to sin and seems to witness to its reality. 7 It still is true that nothing is without. 8 Yet upon nothing are all projections made. 9 For it is the projection that gives the "nothing" all the meaning that it holds.

T-20.VIII.10. What has no meaning cannot be perceived. 2 And meaning always looks within to find itself, and then looks out. 3 All meaning that you give the world outside must thus reflect the sight you saw within; or better, if you saw at all or merely judged against. 4 Vision is the means by which the Holy Spirit translates your nightmares into happy dreams; your wild hallucinations that show you all the fearful outcomes of imagined sin into the calm and reassuring sights with which He would replace them. 5 These gentle sights and sounds are looked on happily, and heard with joy. 6 They are His substitutes for all the terrifying sights and screaming sounds the ego's purpose brought to your horrified awareness. 7 They step away from sin, reminding you that it is not reality which frightens you, and that the errors which you made can be corrected.

When you have looked on what seemed terrifying, and seen it change to sights of loveliness and peace; when you have looked on scenes of violence and death, and watched them change to quiet views of gardens under open skies, with clear, life-giving water running happily beside them in dancing brooks that never waste away; who need persuade you to accept the gift of vision? 2 And after vision, who is there who could refuse what must come after? 3 Think but an instant just on this; you can behold the holiness God gave His Son. 4 And never need you think that there is something else for you to see.20 VIII. I worked as a traditional christian minister for twenty-eight years before becoming an Interfaith minister with a primary focus on A Course in Miracles. One of the differences between the Course and traditional Christianity concerns ‘the forgiveness of sin.’ Simply put, God (Love) does not forgive sin because (Love) God does not condemn.

 

The major difficulty that you find in genuine forgiveness

 on your part is that you still believe

 you must forgive the truth, and not illusions.

Traditional Christianity is dualistic. It posits the existence of Heaven and Hell. Yet, the Course is clear, ‘There is no Hell.” There cannot be an opposite to that which is all-encompassing and God’s Love is all-encompassing.

Choosing the ego as our teacher, instead of the Holy Spirit, is simply a repetition of the original choice for separation we find in the story of the Garden of Eden. It is inevitable. We always feel guilty when we harbor and/or act out attack thoughts. A friend who was subject to outbursts of anger once said, “I hate myself when I do that.” Seeing ourselves as ‘sinners,’ guilt is inevitable. Guilt says, “I am awful and terrible.” And, God says, “You are now, always have been, and will be my blessed child.”

This you must remember;

the attraction of guilt opposes the attraction of God.

His attraction for you remains unlimited,

but because your power, being His, is as great as His,

you can turn away from love.

What you invest in guilt you withdraw from God.

Having ‘split’ minds, we try to follow two masters, sometimes giving our attention to God (love); sometimes we are seduced by the attraction of guilt – and we allow the ego to guide our way. Jesus in both the Gospels and the Course tells us we cannot serve two masters. We cannot follow God and mammon (the ways of the world). Trying to do so places us in an ambiguous position and leaves us feeling guilty, anxious, unfulfilled, out of sorts, and clearly – not the Self we want to be. Put simply, we never lost Heaven. We never can and we never will. 

 

The Grab Bag of Guilt

Ken (Ken Whapnick helped publish the Course) talked about what he called ‘the grab bag of guilt’ we carry with us through this world. My mother, Milly, was with consistency one of the most loving people I ever met. One day when she was already in her 80’s, we were talking on the phone; and she said, “I feel so guilty.” And I said, “About what, Momma?” and she said, “I don’t know.” What she was feeling was the unconscious existential guilt that we can ever now and then dip into. It is a feeling of the wrongness of being separated – i.e., being an ego/body outside of the Mind of God.

Guilt comes as a defense against the truth of who we are. As we practice the principles of the Course and seek to become ever more right-minded, our egos become afraid that our special separated self is going to disintegrate – i.e., that we will lose our ego identity. Our ego identity will indeed be lost because there is no eternity (no Reality) in it. This is, however, nothing to be afraid of, quite the opposite. The loss of the ego and all of its fears is a blessing and never a curse. 

The purpose of guilt is to keep us from remembering that we are Mind. The good news is, we can always choose once again and see things differently. The issue is not what is in ‘the grab bag of guilt.’ The question is why are we so often seduced by the attraction of guilt? Simply stated, “We feel guilt when we decide to join with the ego – we feel great when we join with God.”
